Breeding & Product Development
To be able to deliver the widest selection possible of Kalanchoë with the most popular flower colours and a supreme longevity, Knud Jepsen a/s has, for a number of years, been among the most active Kalanchoë breeders. The main effort of the breeding has been focused on the following criteria:
Flower colour: Bright colours in line with the current trends
The breeding effort allows the introduction of new Kalanchoë plants, which optimise these breeding criteria in order for the selection to follow the current trends in respect to colour and growth without compromising on longevity.
Knud Jepsen a/s has always been committed to product development. During recent years, investments in product development have increased with the building of modern facilities and the employment of more employees. The product development department now comprises 4 to 5 full time employees dedicated to developing and improving the quality of the Kalanchoë varieties on the market. This does not only involve breeding, but also improvement of the conditions under which the plants are produced.
The facilities of the product development department comprise greenhouses for the storage and multiplication of virus free super elite plants, facilities for climatic multiplication and test of new greenhouse fixtures and equipment, e.g. new light fittings. In the department's longevity room, the longevity of the nursery products is continuously tested, and it is ensured that new varieties are always a better alternative than the varieties that are on the market.
The product development department also takes care of quality control of raw materials entering the production, and handles the testing and the implementation of breakthroughs within plant science.
